At a baby shower, everything revolves around the baby: gifts, games, onesies. At a Mother's Blessing, everything revolves around her. Around the woman who is about to give birth.
Everyone asks about the baby, the due date, and the layette. She herself is often overlooked. Yet she's facing one of the biggest transitions of her life, filled with both excitement and anxiety.
At a Mother's Blessing, often also called a Blessingway, her closest women gather. There are small rituals and a few words, sometimes even silence. What comes to the surface is often more than anyone expected: whether she'll manage motherhood, what the birth will do to her, what will become of her and her partner now that they'll soon be a family of three... Tears flow, and there's laughter too, often in quick succession. Ten individually painted baby bodysuits are lovely, no doubt—but how long will she really get to enjoy them? At the end of a Mother's Blessing, she goes into the adventure of having a baby strengthened and nourished, with the firm knowledge (and experience!) that she doesn't have to go through it alone. Because on this day, what is often easily forgotten is spoken aloud: I see you. You'll do great. We're here for you.
This applies to the first child just as much as to the second, third, or fourth... With the first, there are mountains of presents; with the second, the excitement of others is usually less intense. Been there, done that. Yet, with the second child, life is turned upside down just as much. Such an afternoon is especially beneficial for mothers of multiple children – they accomplish so much every day and deserve to be celebrated properly.
Procedure & Organization:
Usually, one or two friends organize everything and coordinate with me to find a suitable option for the pregnant woman. After a free initial consultation, we determine the date, location, and schedule; I take care of the rest. The expectant mother doesn't have to worry about a thing; she simply arrives on the day itself. Whether it's a complete surprise or discussed with her beforehand, it's entirely up to you.
You will split the costs for my accompaniment, desired materials, and meals among yourselves.
Do you already have an idea in mind, or just a feeling that you want to give her exactly that? Write to me, and together we'll figure out what suits you best.
And if you're pregnant yourself and reading this: You don't have to organize anything. Just forward it to those who want to celebrate you. And even if you'd prefer to plan it yourself, I'd be delighted to plan your Mother's Blessing with you!
