{"id":210269,"date":"2020-08-18T08:50:01","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T06:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/babywho.de\/?p=210269"},"modified":"2020-08-18T08:50:01","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T06:50:01","slug":"war-es-ein-geburtstrauma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/babywho.de\/en\/war-es-ein-geburtstrauma\/","title":{"rendered":"Was it a birth trauma?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a difficult birth experience, many women ask themselves: <strong><em>Was that a<\/em> Trauma?<\/strong> These days, you often hear about the infamous birth trauma.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, things went badly \u2013 but a traumatic experience?!<\/p>\n<p>Let&#039;s try to find the answer to this question!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What exactly is birth trauma?<\/h3>\n<p>Broadly speaking, a trauma is first and foremost an injury to your soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You have experienced something frightening, something in which you were subjected to physical or psychological violence.<\/strong> And this violence you experienced still affects your soul. So far, so tragic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How does the trauma affect you?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>First of all, it&#039;s important to distinguish between a traumatic birth on the one hand and your reaction on the other.<\/strong> (If you&#039;re more of a visual person, take a look at the image below, it will give you a better idea!)<\/p>\n<p>It&#039;s actually quite simple: If you experienced a traumatic birth, you may have been able to process it well. Either because someone helped you or because your body was able to cope on its own. (We psychologists call this resilience \u2013 the ability to cope well with significant stress. I&#039;ll probably write a separate blog post about this in the next few weeks, otherwise this will get too long\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, you might not be able to process the experience on your own. Which is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of \u2013 after all, it was a very frightening injury to your soul. <strong>Even emotional scars sometimes need support in healing!<\/strong> Does this mean you are mentally ill?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Birth trauma \u2260 Post-traumatic stress disorder<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Those who experience a traumatic birth do not necessarily develop a so-called trauma-related disorder, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as a direct consequence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The terms are often mixed up, and people use the same terms for trauma, PTSD (which is the same as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, in case you ever read about it!), mental disorder, difficult birth, etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma.bmp\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-210270\" src=\"https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma.bmp 1024w, https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/babywho.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/War-es-ein-Geburtstrauma-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will know that you really need psychotherapeutic support and may be suffering from PTSD if you observe the following in yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You constantly think about the birth (sometimes it even comes back in dreams) or you feel like you&#039;re suddenly in the middle of giving birth again.<\/li>\n<li>You avoid anything that reminds you of the birth (be it conversations about it, the place of birth, the clothing worn on the day of birth, or similar things).<\/li>\n<li>Since the birth, you&#039;ve noticed that your mood has worsened and you can hardly concentrate on anything anymore. You have little motivation to do anything or get excited about anything.<\/li>\n<li>You constantly feel restless or very tense. If someone scares you, you don&#039;t take kindly to jokes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you recognize yourself in these four points, please seek psychotherapeutic support.<\/strong> Perhaps you already know where you want to turn. If not, please take a look here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychotherapiesuche.de\/pid\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.psychotherapiesuche.de<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If points 1-4 don&#039;t quite fit you (or only partially), then you can assume that you probably haven&#039;t suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. <em>However, that doesn&#039;t mean you aren&#039;t suffering.<\/em> (You can see that clearly in the illustration!)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What experiences during birth are traumatic?<\/h3>\n<p>Do you still need confirmation that your experience was bad enough to be classified as birth trauma?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honey \u2013 if it was bad for you, then it was bad for you!<\/strong> You don&#039;t need my permission or a doctor&#039;s permission to admit your suffering!<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, I still have a list for you here. <strong>If you recognize yourself in this, you can assume that it&#039;s worthwhile to process your experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You still have <strong>a specific sentence in mind,<\/strong> The thing the midwife said to you. That injury is still there.<\/li>\n<li>Things didn&#039;t go as you expected. This change overwhelmed you during the birth and <strong>You felt like you were losing control.<\/strong> or to hand over.<\/li>\n<li>During childbirth, someone <strong>You have exceeded your physical limits.<\/strong> It could have been a touch you didn&#039;t want, an examination, or even an intervention. In any case, it upset you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your baby was injured during or after birth.<\/strong> or treated roughly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Was it a birth trauma?<\/h3>\n<p>Answer the following two questions for yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Did you feel threatened?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Were you afraid you simply wouldn&#039;t be able to endure it?<\/strong> (or even die)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you answered &quot;yes&quot; to both questions, then you can assume that your birth experience was traumatic for you and that one can therefore speak of birth trauma.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now you know that this doesn&#039;t necessarily mean you suffer from PTSD. Rather, it means your birth experience was very traumatic for you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What to do?<\/h3>\n<p><em>If you think you need support with your emotional healing, then get some!<\/em> It&#039;s not difficult at all to find support.<\/p>\n<p>It&#039;s possible that a cozy evening with your best friend, where you can tell the whole story, might help.<\/p>\n<p>Because I know how relieving such a conversation can be, I also offer you a professional birth consultation and a complete program to process your birth experience.<\/p>\n<p>My heartfelt wish is that women are freed from their fears \u2013 both the fears before and after childbirth!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>And one more thing\u2026<\/h3>\n<p>Incidentally, childbirth trauma doesn&#039;t only affect mothers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Birth support staff (i.e., midwives, doctors, doulas), birth partners (often the fathers) and of course the babies themselves can also suffer from birth trauma.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A fascinating and far too neglected topic.
